Keep reading to learn about this natural sleep remedy!
Sleep is easily interrupted by anxiety, stress, overthinking and worrying about how tired you will be the next day from not being able to sleep. And without this vital downtime, our bodies can’t recharge for the productive day ahead.
The slightest thing can trigger insomnia and for some people, it’s a minor disruption while others suffer serious effects, like daytime fatigue, low concentration, delayed responses, and memory loss.
Everyday duties can seem impossible with a weary mind and body that’s suffering from sleep deprivation.
According to the Mayo Clinic, adults need seven hours or more of sleep per night. Getting less than the recommended amount on a regular basis “has been linked with poor health, including weight gain, having a body mass index of 30 or higher, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and depression.”
Sleep, at the core of being refreshed and recovered, is a bit of an enigma for the population of restless sleepers who explore solutions to help carry them off into a slumber.
These solutions include wearable devices, whale music, contoured pillows or mattresses, and natural remedies.
Dr. Oz, called “America’s Doctor” by Oprah Winfrey, says that the humble banana might do the trick.
“Bananas are packed with potassium and magnesium, which helps put your body in a relaxed state,” he says on his Facebook page.
The sentiment is echoed in the Journal of Sleep Research, that reports “potassium was associated with less daytime sleepiness.”
Potassium also acts as a muscle relaxer, so that may play a role in affecting sleep.
Taking it a step further, Dr. Oz offers a delicious sleepy time banana tea recipe to wrap your body in warm banana goodness, hopefully allowing you to drift off into a deep sleep.
Simple banana tea
Making this tea takes only a few minutes.
First, make sure you have organic bananas to avoid consuming fruit that’s treated with numerous chemicals.
You’ll need:
- 1 banana, organic
- Small saucepan of water
- Dash of cinnamon, if desired
Next, trim the banana’s edges and boil it for 10 minutes.
Use a colander and pour the liquid into a mug. If you want, you can use cinnamon.
Drink your delicious tea one hour before going to bed!
And, for an added treat, once you’ve removed the banana from the tea, you can snack on that, too! Banana peels are also a good source of potassium, which helps with muscle relaxation, and magnesium, which reduces sleep disturbances.
Banana tea is a natural remedy without the negative side effects of medicated sleeps aids that commonly include:
- Constipation
- Dizziness
- Inability to concentrate and remember
- Abdominal pain
- Weakness
- Uncontrollable shaking
- Parasomnias
