Brother of woman killed in NYC helicopter crash alongside family and pilot speaks out in heartbreaking statement
A sightseeing helicopter crash in New York City on Thursday, April 10, 2025, resulted in the loss of six lives, including a family of five visiting from Spain and the aircraft’s pilot. Authorities and aviation safety experts are now investigating the cause of the accident, which occurred in the Hudson River shortly after the pilot reported a fuel issue.
Details of the Incident
According to official reports, the incident took place at approximately 3:15 PM Eastern Time. The helicopter, operated by New York Helicopters and piloted by former Navy SEAL veteran Sean Johnson, was en route when Johnson radioed in to indicate a need for fuel. Moments later, the aircraft reportedly broke apart midair before crashing into the river.
All six individuals onboard were tragically killed in the crash. Among them were Siemens executive Agustín Escobar, his wife Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three children, aged 11, 5, and 4, who were visiting from Barcelona, Spain.

Family Member Issues Statement
The victims’ relative, Joan Camprubí Montal, traveled to New York City shortly after the incident to identify the remains and pay tribute. During a press conference, he honored his lost family members, stating:
“We will never forget you. We will keep your smile alive every day of our lives, and I believe that’s the best legacy we can give you.”
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop confirmed the family member’s arrival and expressed condolences on behalf of the community.
Eyewitness Accounts and Operator’s Response
Michael Roth, owner of the helicopter involved, shared details about the last communication with the pilot. Speaking with The Telegraph, Roth noted:
“He called in that he was landing and needed fuel. It should have taken him about three minutes to arrive, but 20 minutes later, he hadn’t shown up.”

An eyewitness identified as Max, who was nearby when the crash occurred, described the incident to ABC News. He reported hearing a loud sound, then witnessing parts of the helicopter separate midair before it descended into the river.
“It looked like the rotor detached from the body before it went straight into the water,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like that before.”
Investigation Underway
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched a formal investigation into the crash. Officials will examine the helicopter’s maintenance records, flight data, and other evidence to determine the cause. New York Helicopters has stated it is cooperating fully with the investigation.
Aviation Safety and Sightseeing Flights
While helicopter tours are a popular way to view Manhattan’s skyline, this incident raises important questions about operational safety, fuel management protocols, and aircraft maintenance procedures in the tourism aviation sector. Experts emphasize that such investigations are crucial to preventing future tragedies.
