Second child dies after ‘poisoned Easter eggs’ sent to family
A second child has tragically passed away after a woman allegedly sent a family “poisoned Easter eggs” in a suspected act of revenge against her ex-boyfriend.
According to reports, Mirian Lira, from Brazil, received chocolate Easter eggs with a note reading: “With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter.”
Mirian shared the eggs with her two children. Shortly after, her son, Luis, 7, fell severely ill. Despite CPR from his father and being rushed to the hospital, Luis suffered cardiac arrest and died on Thursday, April 17.
Mirian and her daughter, Evelyn Silva, were already at the hospital when they began to feel ill. Symptoms reportedly included difficulty breathing and discoloration of the hands—suggestive of poisoning.
In a heartbreaking update reported by Metro, Evelyn, aged 13, also died on Monday, April 21. Her cause of death was determined to be vascular shock resulting from multiple organ failure.
Imperatriz Municipal Hospital stated: “Unfortunately, the clinical condition showed serious and rapid deterioration without responding to treatment.”
Suspect Arrested After Investigation
Police have since arrested Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, the ex-girlfriend of Rafael Silva, the father of the children. Surveillance footage allegedly showed her purchasing the chocolate eggs while wearing a wig.
Authorities seized wigs, chocolate, medicine, and bus tickets — including one dated April 14, two days before the poisoned chocolates were delivered.
Barbosa denied the poisoning, claiming she bought the chocolates before Easter but did not tamper with them.
Police released a statement: “The initial investigations point that jealousy and revenge may have been the motivation for the woman to poison chocolate and send it to her family, given that the investigated is the ex-girlfriend of the current partner of one of the victims.”
The Maranhão Civil Police noted: “The arrest was based on witness testimonies and family statements indicating the woman as the main suspect.”
Mirian Lira reportedly remains hospitalized in stable condition.
