Army sergeant who danced with Melania Trump during inaugural ball revealed what she whispered to him
Sergeant Henry Waller, who had the honor of dancing with First Lady Melania Trump at the inaugural Commander-in-Chief Ball, has shared details about their brief exchange during the high-profile event.
The ball, held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on January 20, featured the newly inaugurated President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump alongside Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance. Both couples danced with members of the armed forces, with President Trump pairing up with Sergeant Tatiana Saldana of the United States Space Force.
A Memorable Exchange
In an interview with Inside Edition, Sergeant Waller opened up about his once-in-a-lifetime experience.
“I walked out on stage. I was trying to contain my composure, but we were told it wasn’t ceremonial composure—we could smile if we wanted to,” Waller said.
He admitted to feeling overwhelmed by the cheers of the crowd but managed to keep his nerves in check.
When asked about his brief conversation with the First Lady, Waller revealed: “I asked her how her night was going. She said it was going good. She asked me how mine was, and I said, ‘It was fantastic.'”

A “Fantastic” Dancer
Waller also praised Melania’s dancing skills, saying, “Oh, yeah, she’s a really good dancer.” He added that the only practice he had for the dance was “back home with [his] wife.”
Melania Trump, known for her elegant fashion choices, wore a striking strapless white gown with geometric black trim, a small slit, and white heels, complemented by a bold black choker. The dress was designed by her longtime stylist Hervé Pierre, who also created her first inaugural gown.

Internet Theories About Melania’s Dress
As is often the case with high-profile events, eagle-eyed observers on social media were quick to notice a peculiar detail about Melania’s dress. Many noted its resemblance to President Trump’s sharpie signature, which had been prominently displayed during the signing of multiple executive orders earlier that day.
One X user wrote: “Does Melania’s dress bear a striking resemblance to Trump’s signature on all those EO’s today, or is it just my imagination?”
Another commented: “The first thing I thought of when I saw Melania’s dress was that it looked like Trump’s signature,” while a third speculated: “Melania’s dress—specifically the black ribbon—reminds me of the Don’s signature swoosh. I wonder if that was part of the intent.”
Though these observations remain speculative, they added a layer of intrigue to an already memorable evening.
A Night to Remember
The Commander-in-Chief Ball not only celebrated the new administration but also highlighted the contributions of the armed forces. For Sergeant Waller, the moment was undoubtedly a career highlight, and his interaction with Melania Trump added a touch of warmth to an otherwise formal occasion.
