Carrie Underwood was the first performer to perform after Donald J. Trump gave his 30-minute inaugural address, marking the beginning of his second term as President of the United States.

The singer was standing in front of former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. She was to sing โ€œAmerica the Beautifulโ€ when they ran into a technical issue with the singerโ€™s background music which forced her to go a capella with the song. She did not let the technical malfunction faze her as she hit the big notes in the song seamlessly.

The singer wore a sleeveless white dress which draped over her. She hit the notes beautifully and a lot of people who were gathered in the Capitol Rotunda sang along with her.

After Underwood concluded her singing, she shook Bidenโ€™s hand, who seemed to have mouthed the words โ€œgreat jobโ€ to her. Carrie Underwood then shook hands with President Donald Trump and vice president JD Vance.

The country music superstarโ€™s participation in the inauguration day celebrations was not appreciated by everyone. She said in a statement, โ€œI love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.โ€

Many of those who were disappointed in the singer were from the LGBTQ+ community who had considered Carrie Underwood an ally because of her 2017 son, โ€œLove Wins.โ€ The lyrics of the song criticized divisive politics, โ€œPolitics and prejudice/How the hellโ€™d it ever come to this?โ€ and โ€œWhen everybodyโ€™s got to pick a side/It donโ€™t matter if youโ€™re wrong or right.โ€ The song was considered to signal that Underwood supported same-sex marriage.

While there were many who criticized her choice, Whoopi Goldberg on โ€œThe Viewโ€ said while she would not be watching the inauguration, she believed it was Carrie Underwoodโ€™s right to choose where she wanted to perform. She said, โ€œIf I believe I have the right to make up my mind to go perform some place. I believe she has the same right.โ€
