Elon Musk makes U-turn on Epstein file claim after fiery X rant about Donald Trump
Just days after publicly criticizing Donald Trump, Elon Musk has quietly reversed course on a now-deleted social media post that sparked a media firestorm.
What Sparked the Fallout Between Musk and Trump?
The tensions began earlier this week when Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice strong disapproval of what he sarcastically dubbed the “Big Ugly Spending Bill” — a pointed critique of President Trump’s recently promoted legislation, officially named the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
As Musk aired his frustrations over the bill’s content, things escalated quickly. On Thursday, June 5, Musk posted a message that sent shockwaves across political and tech circles:
“Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.
Have a nice day, DJT!”
This remark came on the heels of Trump expressing “disappointment” over Musk’s criticism, marking a rare public rupture in their previously cordial relationship.
The Post Has Since Disappeared
Within 48 hours, Musk appeared to reconsider his words. The controversial post linking Trump to the Jeffrey Epstein files has since been removed from Musk’s X account. Neither Musk nor his representatives have publicly addressed the deletion.
The files referenced stem from a 2015 lawsuit involving Epstein’s former associate Ghislaine Maxwell and were filed by one of Epstein’s accusers, the late Virginia Giuffre. Musk provided no direct evidence in support of his claims.
Trump Responds: “I Didn’t Create This Mess — I’m Here to Fix It”
President Trump addressed the feud via Truth Social, writing:
“I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago.
This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress.
It’s a Record Cut in Expenses — $1.6 Trillion — and the Biggest Tax Cut ever given.
If this Bill doesn’t pass, there will be a 68% Tax Increase, and things far worse than that.”
He went on to add, “I didn’t create this mess, I’m just here to FIX IT. This puts our Country on a Path of Greatness. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
White House and Trump Allies Defend the President
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt weighed in on the matter, telling MailOnline:
“This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted.”
Trump also reposted a statement from David Schoen, attorney for Epstein at the time of his death. Schoen claimed:
“I was hired to lead Jeffrey Epstein’s defense as his criminal lawyer 9 days before he died.
He sought my advice for months before that. I can say authoritatively, unequivocally, and definitively that he had no information to hurt President Trump.
I specifically asked him!”
Musk’s Financial and Political Fallout
The online feud had more than just reputational consequences. Reports suggest Musk’s net worth took a hit as Tesla’s stock price dropped following the controversy. Meanwhile, political tensions cooled slightly in the past 24 hours, with both men publicly wishing each other “well” despite clear underlying friction.
Musk also recently resigned from his advisory role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), adding another layer of separation from Trump’s current administration.
What Comes Next?
Whether this marks the end of the public spat or just a temporary ceasefire remains to be seen. For now, both figures appear to be stepping back from direct confrontation.
As the dust settles, the episode serves as a reminder of how quickly political and personal alliances can unravel in the age of social media — especially when billionaires and presidents collide.
