Joni Mitchell, 80, makes Grammys performance debut with stunning rendition of ‘Both Sides Now’

For the first time in her legendary career, Joni Mitchell performed at the Grammys Sunday evening.
The 80-year-old sung her 1966 hit “Both Sides Now” alongside Brandi Carlile, Blake Mills, Allison Russell, Lucius, Jacob Collier, and Sista Strings.
While Mitchell has been nominated 18 times and won 10 Grammys, her 10th win coming Sunday night for best folk album, she has never performed at the award ceremony.

In 2015, following a brain aneurysm, Mitchell retreated from the public eye. The “Big Yellow Taxi” singer said though she survived the brain aneurysm, she had to relearn a lot of basics.
“I’m learning,” she said. “I’m looking at videos that are on the net to see where I put my fingers, you know. It’s amazing what an aneurysm knocks out – how to get out of chair!… You have to relearn everything.”
Carlile was one of many musicians who helped Mitchell get back to where she was at her prime.
“[I’ve] watched one of the most miraculous things I’ve seen in my life,” Carlile said in 2023 when Mitchell performed at the Gorge Amphitheater in Quincy, Washington, “and now you get to see it.”
It was Mitchell’s first headlining, ticketed performance in 20 years.
