Lady Gaga’s “too big” dress sparks stir at ‘Joker’ UK premiere

It’s hardly a surprise that Lady Gaga has found herself the talk of the town this month, and the interest hit fever-pitch following the UK premiere of the hotly-anticipated Joker: Folie à Deux.

The superstar singer-turned-actor made a splash alongside her partner, the lesser-known Michael Polansky, when the pair stepped out at the Venice Film Festival at the beginning of September. Readers may remember that Gaga’s dress sparked pregnancy rumors then, though we must stress that these are only rumors.

In any case, September 25 marked the UK premiere of Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the celebrated Joker movie of 2019. The flick sees Gaga feature as female lead opposite the ever-captivating Joaquin Phoenix, and the project as a whole has been wrapped in an undeniable sense of hype.

In typical fashion, Lady Gaga was out to draw attention at the London event, donning a sprawling red gown with high shoulder pads and a deep, plunging neckline.

In many ways it seemed as though the 38-year-old was aiming to embody Harley Quinn, the character she portrays in Joker: Folie à Deux. The Just Dance hitmaker wore smoky blue eyeliner with one tear running down her right cheek. Her ruby lipstick matched her dress, and her makeup as a whole certainly gave off comic book vibes.

Yet while the vast majority of us can at least appreciate the look she was striving to attain, there were others who were… let’s say less appreciative.

It should go without saying that the internet will always be the internet, and people will always be entitled to share their opinions, be they negative or positive. Even so, it may come as a surprise that so many individuals appeared baffled by Gaga’s choice of outfit.

“I feel like this is really safe for her and doesn’t fit her well (too large). She could have brought more drama. Makeup is interesting though,” one person opined on Instagram.

On Reddit, one person wrote: “Sometimes the dress looks perfect on her, and then in other pics it looks too big.”

Another responded with: “Yeah, I think the dress doesn’t move well. When she stands straight with her arms at an even length, she looks good. But when she moves around […], the dress looks big and bulky.”

A third person on Reddit offered: “She’s too short for it.”

A fourth, meanwhile, weighed in with: “The fabric is too stiff.”

It should be said that it wasn’t only Gaga’s dress that got people talking. There were also a deal of people in the comments sections across various social media platforms who felt the need to weigh in on the apparent similarities between Gaga’s fiancé, Michael Polansky, and her co-star Joaquin Phoenix.

Gaga and businessman Polansky were first photographed kissing at a New Year’s Eve party in 2020 and their relationship has gone from strength to strength since then.

“Joaquin and her [fiancé look] like brothers,” wrote one person after the Joker: Folie à Deux UK premiere.

“Wow Joaquin [and] Michael look SO similar.” “I thought it was [Joaquin]!” stated another.

A Reddit user offered: “Michael Polansky looks so much like Joaquin that I had to do a double take on every slide.”

“SAME I keep thinking that everytime I see [a] pic of them together,” replied another.
