Neil Diamond amazes crowd with rare ‘Sweet Caroline’ performance they didn’t see coming
Neil Diamond is one of the best-selling musicians of all time.
Having sold more than 130 million records worldwide, he’s one of the most famous singers and songwriters ever.
Since the 1960s, when he started his career, he never stopped filling concert halls with numerous fans until 2018, when he shared that he is suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
This was the reason why, at the time, he canceled a tour he had planned in Australia and New Zealand.
“It is with great reluctance and disappointment that I announce my retirement from concert touring. I have been so honored to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years,” Diamond shared at the time, according to PEOPLE.
As he explained, his condition didn’t allow him to travel and perform on a large-scale basis as he had done until then.
Still, he thanked all of his fans for being supportive all those years, and reassured them that he’d still be an active musician for a long time.
“This ride has been ‘so good, so good, so good’ thanks to you,” he added in his statement.
Since he made his Parkinson’s diagnosis public, he has stopped the tours, but he has been performing every now and then, even surprising audiences.
On March 7, 2020, he performed at the Keep Memory Alive Power of Love Gala at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, while on June 18, 2022, he sang “Sweet Caroline” during the 8th-inning stretch of a Red Sox game at Fenway Park in a surprise appearance.
His latest surprise to his fans was last December, only a few weeks before turning 82, during the opening night of his Broadway musical A Beautiful Noise.
This was actually the first time he performed in his hometown since 2017, and the members of the audience couldn’t be more excited when they saw him.
On that night, the iconic singer walked the red carpet with his wife, Katie McNeil, and entered the theater to a standing ovation.
After that, it was time for a little- or rather a huge- surprise to his fans. He sang “Sweet Caroline” to them.
Neil Diamond, accompanied by his family, stood there, looking at the audience, with the microphone in his hands, singing one of his most popular songs.
The crowd was left astounded. Throughout the performance, everyone kept clapping to the rhythm of the song.
At the same time, they sang along with him, which was amazing.
Neil Diamond looked happier than ever to be able to entertain his fans and to get the chance to give them such a big surprise.
The video was then posted on YouTube, and it quickly went viral.
As for the comment section, it’s full of positive comments for this idol.
“He still sounds amazing. His voice is so impactful, even with years and illness taking its toll. A rare talent to be able to do this,” someone wrote.
