Reason behind strange white bumps you can find on your private parts

If you’ve ever noticed small white or yellowish bumps on your lips or intimate areas, you might feel a bit uneasy or even worried. Rest assured, though—these bumps are typically harmless and surprisingly common.
These bumps are medically known as Fordyce spots, named after Dr. John Addison Fordyce, an American dermatologist who first described them in 1896. Despite their appearance, they are not a sign of any disease, infection, or health problem.
What Are Fordyce Spots?
Fordyce spots are enlarged oil glands that secrete sebum—a natural oily substance that helps protect and moisturize the skin. These spots are most commonly found on the edges of the lips, inside the cheeks, the shaft or foreskin of the penis, the scrotum, or the labia. While their location might cause concern, they are entirely natural and not contagious.

Are They Harmful?
The Cleveland Clinic emphasizes that Fordyce spots are not sexually transmitted diseases or infections. They are a normal anatomical feature that affects around 80 percent of people at some point in their lives. Although they might resemble other conditions such as molluscum contagiosum, milium cysts, epidermoid cysts, genital warts, or herpes, Fordyce spots do not pose any health risks.
Should You Be Concerned?
Understandably, noticing any unusual bumps on your body—especially in intimate areas—can feel alarming. However, it’s important to remember that Fordyce spots are a common and benign occurrence. They do not require medical treatment and generally cause no discomfort.
If you are uncertain or concerned that the bumps might be related to another condition, it’s always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional for reassurance. A doctor can help differentiate between Fordyce spots and other possible skin conditions, putting your mind at ease.
The Takeaway
Human bodies come in all shapes and sizes, and having a few small bumps here and there is completely normal. While smooth, flawless skin may be the ideal in movies and media, reality tells a different story. Fordyce spots are just another part of human anatomy and shouldn’t cause unnecessary worry.
If you’re still feeling uneasy or unsure about what you’re experiencing, seeking professional medical advice is always a wise choice. Your healthcare provider can offer guidance and address any concerns you may have.
